Breast Augmentation Chicago

If you make the decision to have your breasts enlarged or augmented, there are many things that you should know before undergoing the surgery.  It is important to find a quality doctor with experience and certification.  There are potential risks involved, and making sure those risks are minimized will ensure that you will enjoy your new figure without to suffering unnecessary problems.

There are many qualified breast surgeons in the Chicago area.  He/she should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and approved by the California State medical board.  Make sure that you choose one who can show you the outcomes of other patients, and that you feel comfortable with them and they answer any questions you may have.

Most women who choose breast augmentation desire a fuller bust line and feel that their natural breast size is too small.  You should have a strong desire to enhance your breasts, and feel more attractive with larger breasts.  People who may have doubts and are unsure are probably not good candidates for breast augmentation surgery.

Consultation
The first appointment with your surgeon will be a consultation.  During this appointment you will be assessing the doctor as well as them assessing you and your expectations.  This is the time to ask any questions you have and request before and after photos of recent patients.   You should feel comfortable with the surgeon and their staff, and the doctor should willingly answer all your questions to your satisfaction.

There are several things you should know about your potential surgeon that you will need to ask. Some examples are:

- Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
- Have you ever been disciplined by the California State Medical Board or any other organizations?
- How many breast enhancement surgeries have you performed? How many in a month or year?
- How long have you been practicing breast implant operations?
- Are you licensed or have practiced in any other states?
- Who are your primary patients?  Breast augmentation or reconstruction?
- What is your rate of complications?  What is the most common complication?
- What if I am not satisfied with the outcome of my operation?
- What type of complications and risks are involved?
- If I have the implants removed in the future, how will my breasts look?
- How long do the implants last?
- Will I have to have more surgeries to replace or repair them if there are problems?
- Do the implants change in appearance over time?
- Will breast feeding be a problem?
- Who makes the implants? Is there a warranty?
- What are the materials in the implants?
- What is the difference between Saline and Silicone?
- What shape, placement site and incision area would you recommend for me?

The decision regarding your implants will involve choosing size, texture, and shape.  The implants can be inserted under the breast in two locations: Under the breast muscle or over the breast muscle, just under the breast.  Your doctor can determine which placement is best for you.

There are also four possible incision sites:
In the lower fold of the breast – this tends to hide the incision well, and probably the most commonly performed.  Surgeons can use a small 1” incision to perform the implantation.

Around the nipple area – this method would seem to hide any scarring but a small scar is usually visible, and sometimes a larger scar results.  About 50% of patients may lose normal feeling in the nipple.

In your Axilla or Underarm – some surgeons use this incision site commonly when implanting under the breast muscle, but it also used for over the muscle.  The main disadvantage here is that the scar can thicken, leaving a visible sign that you have had implants.  If you wear a sleeveless top and raise your arms, the scar will show.  It may also hinder the surgeon’s ability to properly place the implant.

Through the navel – This method is not widely recommended by many surgeons. Although the advantage is that there is no scar showing, the procedure of getting the implant from the navel to the breast involves using an endoscope with a dissecting balloon. The endoscope, a long tube that is inserted at the naval and must reach up to the implant site, is combined with the dissecting balloon in order to fit the implant through.  The pocket this creates along the abdomen and chest can be unsightly, and the pressure in the implants may cause premature leakage.
